On Sunday 17th November 2024, Cambridgeshire Cricket hosted 3 girl’s clubs and 4 women’s clubs at an Indoor Soft Ball Cricket Competition at Trumpington Community College. The girl’s clubs in attendance were Histon, Sawston & Babraham and Thriplow. The women’s clubs in attendance were Sutton, March, Northstowe and Ickleton.

The day was brimming with amazing talent and for some it was their first time playing cricket; thank you to those who helped the day run so smoothly and for our official umpire Dan Vickers who volunteered his time.

Our next ECB Umpiring Course which is taking place

Our next ECB Umpiring Course which is taking place at Comberton Village College on Sunday 6th April starting at 10am.

We have just 2 places left!!!! So if you want to come and join the fun look sharp and act as this will be our last ECB Umpiring Course run locally until the End of the Season.

This course is designed to give participants the key skills, knowledge and confidence to stand as an umpire in cricket, so whether you plan to support Junior Softball cricket through to adult cricket, this course will cover:

- Understanding the role of the umpire
- Gain a basic understanding of umpiring the game
- Answering appeals and the common methods of dismissal
- How to communicate effectively with all stakeholders in the game
- Judging whether or not it is safe to play

The course is split into classroom and practical learning, so we recommend learners to come dressed appropriately.

Learners will be asked to complete some e-learning prior to attending the course, which will take no more than 90 minutes to complete and can be completed via multiple visits or in one go.

There is a charge of £70.00, however post course you will receive benefits far in excess of the course fee, including membership of the Association of Cricket Officials.

Also following the course, learners will have the confidence and competence to go and umpire at appropriate levels within recreational cricket and will be supported and mentored to support their on-going progress.

Cricket is a game for everyone! And umpires contribute to making this so in every single game so come and take the best seat in the house and become an Umpire!

Today, we’re introducing some of the women working across the Cambridge Cricket Board as well as celebrating all our female players, coaches, umpires, volunteers and supporters who contribute to the development & success of the women’s and girl’s game in Cambridgeshire.

First up - Hannah Warren: Women’s & Girls’ Participation Officer
“Cambridgeshire Cricket’s vision is to continue to transform the game for women and girls, championing a vibrant environment while allowing all individuals to say that cricket is ‘a game for them’”.

Next, we have - Jo Taylor-Ticehurst: Women & Girls Administrator
“What I love about cricket? I love the social aspect of cricket and the opportunities it offers, on and off the pitch, from beginners through to professionals”

Next, Lizzy Conder - Umpire, Board Member
“My ambition is to really grow the number of women regularly umpiring women and girls’ cricket in Cambridgeshire. Currently there are four women umpires in Cambridgeshire and really only me umpiring regularly”

We continue to have high ambitions for Women’s & Girl’s cricket in Cambridge to keep growing the game from grass root level to county with lots of excitig initiative and events to ensure women and girls of all abilities can play cricket all year round.

Our Safe Hands Course being run on 12th March (nex

Our Safe Hands Course being run on 12th March (next Wednesday) at Sawston & Babraham CC's Spicers Pavilion is now full.

That means if your Club has appointed a new Club Safeguarding Officer and they have not attended the face-to-face Safe Hands training there is only one opportunity left locally, and we don't just mean in Cambridgeshire but including neighbouring Counties.

Our last course is on 1st May at Over Community Centre, 16 The Doles, Over, CB24 5NW, starting at 6.15pm.

Just a reminder, through their Affiliation, all Clubs in Cambridgeshire commit to the ECB Safe Hands Policy, which means they will use the Safe Hands system and have a fully qualified Club Safeguarding Officer.

To be a fully qualified Club Safeguarding you must have:
- A valid ECB DBS certificate
- Have completed and have valid Safeguarding in Specialist Roles training (which will be replaced by the ECB Safeguarding Level 2 training any day!). This course is purely online and the training is valid for 3 years
- Have attended the face-to-face Safe Hands training. This face-to-face course and once attended the training is valid for 3 years

For the avoidance of doubt you must have all 3 parts in place to be a qualified Club Safeguarding Officer.

Also be reminded if a Club does not have a qualified Club Safeguarding Officer in place a League, even though you may have already entered, not allow your Club to play competitive cricket until a fully qualified Club Safeguarding Officer is in place.

Our course on 1st May is our last course and nationwide the next course geographically close to us is in either Guildford or Leicestershire later in May.

Just a reminder to all Clubs over the next 4 weeks we are running 2 Emergency 1st Aid courses.

These will be brilliant for Clubs who are looking to ensure their Club is compliant with the ECB recommendation that there is a qualified 1st Aider present at any game or official training/coaching session in the Men's, Women's and Junior games at any level of the game.

Both courses start at 6.15pm and last about 3 hours. The courses are run by the brilliant Emma Walker, who herself is a long distance athlete and understands fully the impact of situations in a sporting environment when help is needed and the benefits of having a qualified 1st Aider present.

There is a cost of £40 and compared to other providers this presents excellent value for money.

We encourage all Clubs to look at each team they run and ask "Are we covered?" and if not act while you have the chance.

The Umpiring Skills Development Workshop's, presented by Cambridgeshire Cricket and the Cambs and Hunts Association of Cricket Officials are pleased to announce the dates of the first two, which are deliberately planned to take place pre-season.

These 2.5 hour sessions are aimed at increasing knowledge of the laws, showing the importance of the role of the umpire (even if you stand for 10 overs) and the importance of working with team captains, which will give you the confidence to stand as an umpire.

💡If you play in a team where there is not usually an appointed umpire you should attend

🛎If you manage or coach a junior team you should attend and encourage the parents of your players to attend

🥁If you played last year and are retiring but want to stay involved in the game you should attend.

This workshop is free, but space at each of the 2 venues is limited to 24 participants, so please do not hold back booking your place.

There are just 6 places left on our next ECB Umpiring Course which is taking place at at Comberton Village College, on Sunday, 6th April starting at 10am.

The ECB Get Set Weekend returns on 5th and 6th April and 19 Clubs around the Cambridgeshire have signed up a;ready.

It's not too late for your Club to get involved!

Over the years the Get Set Weekend has been the pre-season focal point for Clubs to get their Grounds and Club Houses in tip-top condition before the start of the season.

This year, we encourage clubs to place a focus on inspiring and celebrating their people, be it players or volunteers, new or returning. The incredible dedication and outstanding contributions from both players and volunteers have a lasting impact on the sport.

🏵 Last year, in Cambridgeshire alone we saw Clubs engaging their members with Scoring workshops, Bat Repair Clinics or looking to reduce the cost of entry into the game by launching kit recycling schemes.

The ECB, supported locally by Cambridgeshire Cricket will be providing a variety of resources and toolkits to support your Get Set Weekend plans, as well as offering a number of prizes and incentives to registered clubs, including:

Busy day across Cambridgeshire Cricket today.

First thing this morning we started our last ECB Core Coach Development course of our Autumn and Winter programme at Comberton Village College.

Then to Northstowe Academy to host a Dynamos festival for new girls team Cambridge St Giles, who played against Histon Hawks ( Histon Cricket Club ) and March Mini-Marvels ( March Town Cricket Club ).

Lastly a Basic Scoring Skills Workshop, hosted at March Town Cricket Club where 15 people from various clubs (the hosts, Sutton Cricket Club, Little Shelford Cricket Club est.1877 amongst others) gathered to learn the basics.

More about each of these initiatives in further posts during the week.

Over 60 people including Players, Coaches, Scorers and tutors engaging in the game they love!

Today at Fenners Indoor Cricket School 26 coaches

Today at Fenners Indoor Cricket School 26 coaches from in and around Cambridgeshire attended a Fielding Masterclass, led by @fieldingcoaching seen as one of the best fielding coaches in the Country.

Over 4 hours, Cookie led the group in learning more about the best in class method of catching, fielding, throwing and diving.

A brilliant session!

What was particularly great was seeing 5 Women who have qualified as Coaches in Cambridgeshire in the last 3 years and are actively coaching and have taken the opportunity to continue to develop their knowledge and skills to deliver brilliant sessions to those they coach.

This will certainly help the continued growth of Women's and Girls Cricket in Cambridgeshire.

Great to have former Cambs county age group player

Great to have former Cambs county age group player @zum.__ come along to our Boys Emerging Players Programme session last night to train with the lads before he heads off to Cape Town for pre season training!

Zum worked with the batters on some white ball batting and then supported the seamers and their death bowling skills including a Yorker competition with the lads!

Zum has had a busy winter so far with trips to South Africa with the @englandcricket Lions squad and Abu Dhabi on the ECB Fast bowling programme!

Good luck for the rest of the winter and the summer with @gloucestershire_cricket Zum! Always a pleasure having you back with us!

Two of the Category Winners in the Cambridgeshire Awards were recognised as Highly Commended in the judging process.

We would like to add our congratulations to:

🚜Theo Liversedge of March Town Cricket Club who was Highly Commended in the Rising Star Category for his outstanding work on the ground at March Town Cricket Club.

In Cambridgeshire we received 64 nominations and we thank each person who took the time to nominate people they could see doing great things around their club.

Those nominations were the tip of the iceberg in regard to our small and growing band of volunteers in Cambridgeshire and we want to say thank you to each and everyone of you for giving up the time you do to make Cricket a Game for everyone.

Later this week we will be launching the Winter Wonders Awards in Cambridgeshire for 2025 and if you have noticed someone in your Club who has been working throughout the darker months to create something special for next season please do nominate them.

The 2025 Cricket Collective Grassroots Awards will also be back later this year.

The #GetSetWeekend 2025, powered by The Cricket Collective, will be held on 5-6 April when clubs up and down the country will be encouraged not only to get their facilities and equipment ready, but also to inspire their local community by promoting their club and engaging all of their members, whether they are players or volunteers and encouraging new members to come and join them.

The ECB this morning have formally recognised 89 Coaches across the Country who were nominated for the ECB Coach Awards as part of the 2024 - The Cricket Collective Grassroots Awards in 3 categories.

Martyn Kiel, of the ECB Coach Development Team said "With the announcement of the National Prize winners we wanted to say thank you to people that have made a significant contribution to coaching cricket and say thank you to everyone who was nominated across the three categories.

In Cambridgeshire -
- Leah Harrup from City of Ely CC won the Young Coach of the Year.
- Stuart Dockerill of Cambridgeshire Cricket won Coach of the Year
- Iain Malthouse of Longstanton Grasshoppers won Outstanding Contribution - Services to Coaching

From a local level it is great to see local coaches recognised on a National platform.

We would like to say "Thank You" to all coaches in Clubs, Schools or in County pathways across the County.

You are at the beat of the heart of the game introducing Cricket to new players and in helping them develop their talents.

Girl’s ONLY Street Sessions continue every Monda

Girl’s ONLY Street Sessions continue every Monday at Trumpington Community College 6-7pm.

These sessions are aimed at any girl starting out on their soft ball cricket journey or who may lack confidence.

There are two female coaches at each session.

If you have a game being played on your ground (Se

If you have a game being played on your ground (Senior or Junior, Men’s or Women’s) you are duty bound to have a qualified First Aider either on-site or participating in the game.

With the season rapidly approaching, it is important that we start to thing about our members and what might happen if someone needs medical help in a game or during a training session.

Good practice recommends if you run any form of match or training session you have someone who is First Aid trained on-site or participating.

As a Coach responsible for an indoor net session or training session outside it is important that while your session is taking place there is a First Aider available or you should take personal responsibility if no-one else is around.

To help with this we have two courses coming up in 2025.
