On 16th February (between 12.15pm and 4.30pm, at Fenners Indoor Cricket School) we have legendary Fielding Coach Cookie Patel in attendance to present the latest session aimed at helping Coaches in Cambridgeshire and this session will be appropriate to every Coach!

Cookie Patel is an ECB level 4 coach and is a hugely experienced fielding coach. His previous fielding coach roles include England Women, Derbyshire CCC, Northants CCC, Yorkshire CCC and Lancashire Thunder and his presenting style is always very well received.

On Monday, the ECB launched the announcement of the annual Get Set Weekend on April 5-6.

In Cambridgeshire we encourage all clubs to sign up as it is a great way to get your members together to engage in important and key pre-season activities to get your clubhouse and ground in tip-top condition for the start of the season.

So come on guys, get your club signed up.

The ECB will provide merchandise for the first 1000 clubs signed up, plus your club will have a chance to win England match tickets and Jewson vouchers worth upto £500.

In association with the Association of Cricket Off

In association with the Association of Cricket Officials we are pleased to launch our first Scoring Skills Workshop.

Led by the brilliant Helen Hyde with assistance from Cindy and Ian this face-to-face workshop will help participants learn about the core constituent skills to allow them to score a game of cricket at any level.

Knowing how to score is a skill, just as important as being able to bat or bowl and anyone involved in playing the game should know how to score, as a scorer is required in every game, so this includes players who have to do 10 overs while playing, junior members, women playing in either the Soft Ball or Hard Ball game, young people or parents watching Youth Games in the CYCA or young players or Parents in the County Age Group or MCC Foundation representative games.

This workshop is aimed at those aged 14+ and will suit all those who are interested in the game, but do not know how to score, but will be required definitely those who play and will have to score several overs in an innings and are not sure of the important tasks that surround the game.

In this workshop we will cover:
- Umpire signals
- Completion of basic box scorebook
- Balancing and checking of scorebook
- Methods of dismissal
- Scorer duties

We will also be able to discuss other scoring methods and scorer education.

The workshop takes place on Sunday, 23rd February at March Town Cricket Club, Burrowmoor Road, March, PE15 8RG and will run from 2.30pm until about 5pm.

The workshop is FREE, but because it is free do not underestimate the value this course will give you.

The date of the next ECB Umpiring Course in Cambri

The date of the next ECB Umpiring Course in Cambridgeshire has been announced.

This course, which is a combination of a couple of hours on-line work, which you can do at home in your own time and a 6 hour face-to-face practical session, so come to the course ready to participate in appropriate clothing and with clean training shoes.

Whether you plan to support Junior Softball cricket through to adult cricket, this course will cover the following topics:

- Understanding the role of the umpire
- Gain a basic understanding of umpiring the game
- Answering appeals and the common methods of dismissal
- How to communicate effectively with all stakeholders in the game
- Judging whether or not it is safe to play

To join this course you must be 14 years old or older.

Post course, learners will have the confidence and competence to go and umpire at appropriate levels within recreational cricket.

The course will take place on:
Sunday, 6th April, starting at 10am and running through to about 4.30pm (including a lunch break)

The venue for the course is Comberton Village College, which is located on West Street in Comberton.

There is a cost of £70, however all participants on completing and qualifying as an umpire will receive many benefits equal to the value of the course.

Post course candidates will receive support to help establish them as an umpire, which allows them to take the best seat in the house in any game.

We know and understand that things are changing in our Clubs with Annual General Meetings coming up.

It is important to remember that as part of the Affiliation process every Club must have a Club Safeguarding Officer and should comply with the ECB Safe Hands Policy.

To be a fully accredited and trained Club Safeguarding Officer there are 3 things they need:-

- a current ECB DBS certificate
- to have completed the ECB Safeguarding for Specialist Roles online training
- to have attended the face-to-face Safe Hands training workshop (training is in date for 3 years).

This season in Cambridgeshire were are running 3 Safe Hands workshops, so if you are starting up in the role as Club Safeguarding Officer or you need to take some refresher training there are plenty of options.

Our next ECB Core Coach Course is rapidly approaching, starting on 23rd February at Comberton Village College, starting at 9.30am.

The course will suit an existing Level 1 or Foundation Coach looking to extend their experience or an experienced player feeling its time to give back to the game to help develop to young players to help them their full potential.

This course adds onto everything you have learned on the ECB Foundation and teaches you the dynamics behind player-centred coaching and lets you hone you skills on the different aspects of the game using both on-line and face-to-face modules, delivered by our brilliant ECB Tutors.

There is a cost of £300, but most progressive thinking clubs pay all or part of your course fee. Over the New Year another 6 Young People have signed up to the Young Leaders in Cricket - Cambridgeshire cohort for 2025, making the total number of sign ups 16. We would love more.

Essentially it is about Young People with an interest in Cricket, being given the training, coaching, confidence (and real qualifications) to be able to successfully volunteer back into the game they love, using skills that will be useful throughout their future life!

Have you heard?

Young Leaders in Cricket is back in Cambridgeshire in 2025 and we are looking for 25 young people from across the County, in School Years 9 to 11, who want to become local heroes within their club to join the programme which will provide skills and experience to volunteering in the game at their own club and in their local community.

We will provide you with all of this training:
🏏Young Official - so you can assist your club by umpiring or scoring junior games and develop your skills. The first session of this module will take place on Thursday 20th February at the Spicers Pavilion, Cambridge Road, Sawston, starting at 10am.

🏏Coaching Activator - meaning you can assist with junior training and start your Coaching journey. The first session of this module will take place on Thursday 10th April at the Spicers Pavilion, Cambridge Road, Sawston, starting at 10am.

🚜Grounds and Environment, so you can assist your Clubs Volunteer Grounds Team in getting ready for a game and assist in making your ground the pride of your community. The date of this module is to be confirmed, but will take place during the May half-term.

👩‍⚕️Emergency 1st Aid - so that when someone else needs your help you have the skills and confidence to step forwards

👌Mental Resilience

⚖️Safeguarding awareness

This course is for Accredited Level 1 scorers, thinking about scoring matches for multiple clubs or in new and longer formats of the game.

You know how to score, so on this course we focus on the planning and preparation required when scoring away from your own club and some of the additional duties that a scorer could perform.

The course will be held on:
- Sunday, 9th February at Bury St Edmunds CC, Newton Road, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 2BT.
- Course times: 10.00 am start. Finish at approx 4:00 pm.
- Refreshments: Tea and coffee will be provided. Attendees should bring their own lunch and snacks.

ECB Umpiring Course
Following the introduction of the popular ECB Umpiring Course last season, our next course is timed to take place immediately before the start of the season.

This course is designed to give new umpires the core skills, knowledge and confidence to stand as an umpire in cricket. No prior experience of umpiring in cricket is required before attending the course.

Whatever standard of cricket you wish to support, this course will cover the following topics:

- Understand the role of the umpire

- Communicating effectively with all stakeholders in the game
- Judge whether it is safe to play

The course comes with practical learning, so we recommend learners to come dressed appropriately.

You will be asked to complete some e-learning prior to attending the course, this takes about 90 minutes to complete and this can be completed in bite-sized chunks.

In 2025 Young Leaders in Cricket is back. We are looking for 25 young people from across the County who want to increase their life skills through volunteering in the game they love and their local community.

We will provide you with the following training
In Person Training:
- Coaching Activator - meaning you can assist with junior training, All Stars or Dynamos
- Young Official, you can assist your club by umpiring or scoring junior games and develop your skills
- Grounds and Environment, so you can assist your Clubs Volunteer Grounds Team in getting ready for a game and make your ground the pride of your community

- Emergency 1st Aid - so when someone else needs your help you have the confidence to step forwards
- Fundraising and Social Media Marketing

Your skills will also be tested with a challenge to Fundraise £60 for the programme. You can do this as a group as part of a wider fundraising effort. Any extra raised can be donated back to your club or a charity of choice.

YLiC will help your confidence increase and develop so many important life skills such as developed communication, planning, project management, problem management skills and more.
